  • ADDICTED TO ACTION: Introducing Nikon Europe Ambassador, Ray Demski

It is with great pleasure that we introduce our newest Nikon Europe Ambassador: Ray Demski : the fourth photographer to join the programme. The Nikon Europe Ambassador programme works with some of the best image makers in the world to showcase their unique style, technical approach and imagery. It aims to offer insight and inspiration for budding photographers through a series of unique projects.

    A passion for adventure

Ray is based in Munich, Germany, though you’ll rarely find him at home. He was born to “hippie parents” in the Canadian Rockies who moved onto a sailboat when Ray was 14. It was on that boat that Ray’s father gave him his first camera, and where Ray discovered his calling. Countless beautiful landscapes, 40 countries and seven years later, Ray settled in Europe and embarked on a professional career that would send him around the world, capturing feats of human strength, ingenuity and athleticism.

From Adidas to BMW, Ray has worked with some of the world’s top brands. Some of his best-known work is with Red Bull, photographing their finest athletes taking part in extreme sports, from windsurfing to rock climbing. Ray’s portfolio does not stop at commercial work. He takes a lot of pride in his more personal shoots, such as his ‘Hastings’ project. Ray spent over a month in Vancouver, capturing the lives of people living on the streets. This is one of the projects he is most proud of, and he loves being able to share their individual stories through his photographs. Moving forward, this is a project Ray is looking to develop even more

    Overcoming challenges

Ray has a thirst for adventure and thrives on challenges. He believes that finding solutions to difficult problems helps make him a better photographer.

As an action photographer, Ray cites the weather as one of his biggest challenges, especially on commercial shoots when you’re working on a tight schedule and have limited time with athletes or client. Whether it’s excessive snow, storms or humidity, Ray’s ethic is to power through, and make sure you’re armed with a robust camera to help you capture the best images possible.

Having previously shot on the Nikon D810 and Nikon D500, Ray is looking forward to working with the Nikon D5 more, given its 4k video capabilities and wide coverage. In fact, Ray will be using this during his Special Project, which will be announced at a later date.

Ray is excited to begin his role as a Nikon Europe Ambassador, and sees it as a medium to inspire others. In his role, he hopes to push the possibilities of adventure photography, encouraging others to explore the world and offering advice to those looking to pursue a similar career. Having used Nikon products since beginning his professional career in 2005 Ray has a great relationship with the brand, and Nikon is looking forward to working with him.

‘It’s a great honour to collaborate with and be recognised by a company which has been part of my career since the beginning
and I am looking forward to sharing my knowledge and experience with other photographers.”
