Award-winning sports photographer Matthias Hangst: “Archery is one of the most challenging sports for me during Summer Olympics. There is not too much going on at the field of play, no hard action. A lot of patience and time is needed to get a nice set of pictures.”

“You can walk down to the targets together with the athletes, in the break of a training session. A great opportunity to get something different. You have to hide during the finals if you want to get any action shots, be really quiet and not move at all from the moment they are in position.”

“There are two slums, the so called favelas, close to the archery venue and this creates one of the typical views that many know from Rio de Janeiro. So, I tried to bring these two subjects together in one shot. A bit of action in the foreground and a scenic view in the back!”

The basic action frame in the archery world. An athlete at the moment of releasing the arrow. Thanks a lot to modern DSLR’s with a high frame-rate. Super fast shutter speed and a bit of luck – I call archery the shutter-killer-sport! ”
