Joel Marklund, professional sports photographer from Sweden and European Nikon Ambassador: “I never get nervous at work. Not when covering the 100 metres final starring Usain Bolt, not even when shooting the Sweden vs Canada ice hockey final at Sochi Olympics. But this time something was different. Sarah Sjöström, Sweden’s most successful swimmer over the last few years, won her first Olympic medal and also broke the current world record when competing in the women’s 100 metre butterfly final.
I took my first portrait of Sarah nine years ago, when she was 13 years old and I was 22. Having seen her transformation through the years, the ups and downs in her career and knowing the pressure that built up to this final, I felt a huge relief when she eventually crushed the competition in the race. I guess that was a good kind of nervousness!”
