Vincent Curutchet, renowned French professional sports photographer: “Judo is explosive and unpredictable at the same time. We generally know what should happen, but we never know when or how – in which direction will the judokas’ ‘fly’? Will they face us or not? In short, do we have a chance to catch a great shot, or nothing at all?
Those characteristics make judo more interesting and much more intense to shoot compared to the more predictable sports, in which all the moves are known in advance. The javelin is thrown from here.. The finish line is there.. Surprises are rare.. Not with judo!
We can shoot at the mat level, which quickly makes techniques look aerial and light. Add to this 4-times world champion Misato Nakamura (in white above, competing in the under 52kg category), and you know that you’ll have to stay focused as it could explode at any moment.
And when it does, with a little bit of luck, you can catch a perfect equilibrium – and a gravity-defying image!”
